Android: Opened story disappears when switching apps or unlocked

Hi. Version 14.4.0.

Salient preferences:

  • Stories shown: Unread only
  • After mark read: Stay here
  • Mark stories read: Immediately

Since the recent large update to the app, I find that if:

  • I open a story, get part way through reading it
  • Switch away from the app (e.g.: decide to open the story in a browser, or leave the phone unattended and it locks)

Then, upon returning to the app:

  • The opened story has disappeared, and I’ve returned to the list of stories in that particular feed.
  • The story I was reading is no longer listed (probably because it was marked as read when I opened it).

It’s like it refreshed the story list for the feed in the background, and because I don’t display read stories it clobbered the one I had open.

When this happens and I hadn’t finished with it, I usually have to flick over to Read Stories and re-open it there.

Note:

  • This doesn’t always happen if I’ve switched away and back briefly (e.g. a minute or two). Only if I’m away from the app for some time.

Desired behaviour:

  • Upon returning to the app, the screen is exactly as I left it with the story I was reading opened and the scroll position unchanged.

Ta. (That’s Australian for, “Thanks”!)

This sounds related to, and perhaps a device-specific version of, this bug: Android: Leaving App Focus and Returning Loses Scroll Location

Dunno if it is related or not, but it is a real PITA. Definitely still happening with version 14.4.0 from F-droid. I’ve managed to roll back to version 13.12.3 and will keep that for the foreseeable.

P.S. Is there an RSS feed or web page link that can be used to track the release notes for Newsblur Android app releases?

I found and fixed the Android lifecycle issue that could cause the open story or scroll position to be lost after switching away from the app. The app was sometimes rebuilding the story view too aggressively when returning, so it could lose its place. Version 14.5.2 has been submitted and should be out in a day or two once Google approves the latest Android release.

Hi Samuel. I tried version 14.5.3 (via F-Droid) and the same issue is occurring. If anything, I can now reliably cause it by pressing the power button to lock my phone, then unlocking. The article I had open disappears and the next unread article is opened. Thanks.

P.S. Is there an RSS feed or web page link that can be used to track the release notes for Newsblur Android app releases?

Could you reproduce it once, then send feedback from the app’s main menu? 14.5.3 includes extra reader restore diagnostics in that feedback log, so it should show whether the reader is being recreated, the story batch is being rebuilt, or the story list is reopening the next unread story.

I’ve sent the feedback via support, with the same subject as this post.

Hope it helps. Thanks.

Pushed out a new build, please test again!

Yep, saw your reply email. As soon as the new version shows up on F-Droid I will! Thanks.

It should be out by now, it only takes a few minutes.

The story is not disappearing any more! I can see that it is refreshing and scrolling back to where it was. So problem solved.

When I go back to the list of articles in the feed, I can see that has refreshed too, and all the read articles are gone. Have to find my place again if I was picking out interesting articles in a long list, but not a deal breaker. I have no need to stay on the 13.x version now. Thanks.

It should be out by now, it only takes a few minutes.

I don’t know what to say to that except that I was checking the Newsblur app F-Droid page regularly from when I received your reply email, checking to see if the new version was listed, and it didn’t show up until about 30 hours later. I was refreshing my the F-Droid client app on my phone, too.
