Is it possible to *subscribe* to an OPML URL? I see that you can import them, but I want to subscribe to one, such that when its feed selections change, mine change to match. The specific use-case for this is the various “planet” sites that aggregate RSS feeds-- eg, http://planet.perl.org/ While you can subscribe to their aggregated RSS, it would be nicer to be able to just subscribe to their OPML and do the aggregation in the superior interface here.
Woah, this idea is blowing my mind. I’d love to build that, but would people use it? I suppose this is part of the Bundle feature I’ve had in mind, where you can subscribe to a bundle of grouped feeds and it just adds a folder to your collection. But this would allow that bundle to change in mid-air.
Listen, if you can get a few people to up vote this thread, I’ll look into getting ti done. I’m my own program manager, so I can try to lie to myself and think it’ll only take a single day’s work, but I know these things always span a week, so I’ve gotta make it worthwhile. I’m working on shipping the iPhone app this weekend, a bunch of error fixing, then moving on to customizations.
That’s a fair question… I guess I’ll go see if anyone I know is actually interested in it too. Basically no one currently supports OPML subscriptions, but it’s something I’ve long wished for.
Dave Winer liked the idea (http://scripting.com/stories/2010/09/…) but that’s probably not surprising, see as OPML is his baby.
Nothing constructive to say other than I would totally use this.
JEP ! Would be great !!
I’d be in. Liferea supports (or supported) this in the client feed reader in at least one version I used. It was awesome.
Winter, as usuall, comes up with awesome code stuff and ideas. =)
Well, I vote it up and (as Mrs. Slocombe would say) I am unanimous in this. =)
Very nice idea!
Yes, I would definitely use it. I subscribe to at least feeds in which the blogs change quite a bit, so this would be fantastic.
OPML import that doesn’t remove all of your currently subscribed feeds would be good. Is that in already?
Yup, launched with the redesign. OPML import and Reader import both merge with your existing feeds. You have to explicitly go into Manage > Account > Empty to delete all of your feeds. And then it emails you a copy of your OPML file before it deletes everything so you have a backup.
Genius… one more complaint gone. Keep up the good work.
Wow. That’s awesome!

You know how your app reads OPML so people can import subscription lists?
It would be even more cool if your app could subscribe to OPML lists!
That way, when a new feed appears in the list you would include news from that feed. And when one is removed, you would unsub the user from that feed, automatically.
This would allow new products to be developed that are collections of feeds.
I’ve wanted this feature widely supported for a long time. We had it in Radio UserLand, the reader that started all this michegas. It would be great if Feedly or Digg or one of the others picked up this idea and ran with it.
