I really hate Sports. Of all types. Collegiate and Corporate (professional). I have long since banished NFL, MLB, PGA, NHL, etc.etc. from my feed lists, and that works pretty well for most Sites. BUT! I am having a problem with the Associated Press (AP) feed. It has LOTS of sports crap and rarely uses these terms and instead uses individual team names and personnel names, and playoff names, etc. Too many to banish individually. And the articles don’t contain Categories like “sports” that I can banish.
Anyone have any clever ideas for how to banish these Sports articles?
I built natural language classifiers exactly for this purpose. Text classifiers are great for filtering exactly this type of query. It’s not free but for most feeds it’s pennies per month.
Premium subscription is all you need. The natural language classifiers are there in the training dialog when you hit the Train button at the bottom of every story.
Not working very well. I have tried a couple of different ways and still get lots of sports stories.
And worse, when I use the regular “Story Text” keywords with either Dislike and Super Dislike, these stories still show up. I open the article and see a bunch of Dislike and Super Dislike words highlighted. Why do they still show up?
Ok, found the bug and deployed a fix. When you tell NewsBlur to hide a topic, it was sending “sports” to the AI without saying which direction you meant. The AI read that as “Dean likes sports” and flagged those stories to promote. The code was waiting for the opposite signal, so it threw all of it away. On your feed it correctly spotted 47 sports stories and discarded 39 of them.
Your filter now hides the Man City, FIFA, Haaland, and F1 stories. Nothing to do on your end.
On the Story Text keywords, those are actually working. 10 of 12 recent sports stories scored as hidden. If you still see them, your intelligence slider is probably on “All Stories”, which dims hidden stories rather than removing them. One notch right to “Unread” should fix it.
