Quicker way to save stories

Back on Google Reader, one of my favorite features was starring items. I could quickly hit S to star/unstar items, or just click the star button.

Currently with NewsBlur, I have to either click a dropdown and and then a save button, or right click and hit that save button. It would be really nice if there was a one click save button, or a shortcut key (perhaps ‘S’) to save the item that’s currently focused would be even better.

This is especially annoying when I’m going through my saved items and have to unsave each item one by one. It really adds up when I’ve got 20-30 saved items at once.

This, along with being able to hide read items in feeds, are the only things keeping NewsBlur from being perfect in my eyes.

These are relatively minor things, but they would go a long way in improving the experience (for me, at least).

Keep up the good work!

OK, I just added ‘s’ as a keyboard shortcut for saving/unsaving a story. The show only read stories option will be added soon.

Awesome, many thanks!

+1 On this, add blue star in front of article title or somewhere near title so we can save story with one click.
I didn’t even know that this option existed until I saved story by accident in Android Blar program.

I think you should ditch dropdown menu (left from story title) totally. It just complicates things. As far as I can see, all of those items are easily places above or bellow story title in small icons as with google reader (mark read/unread is just one checkbox, email is easy, facebook and twitter icons are popular, we all know what they do) and with popup tooltip which comes up when you hover item with mouse and explains what is icon doing.

A one-click button is coming. Here’s a screenshot from the social branch, which features the most used items in that drop down menu.

I’d love to upload the image, but GetSatisfaction isn’t letting me. Here’s the image: http://f.cl.ly/items/3u370p2u2p2r1V09…

To which story is that star related?

I’ve always imagined this would work like stars/flagging in an email program, where the star is in the same row as the title in the “inbox”.

That’s what I was aiming for. Should be same for mark read/unread, share e-mail, facebook, twitter buttons

Stories that are starred already have a star next to their title.

But we can’t add a star that way, nor can we remove it.
It’s a visual indicator that can’t be directly interacted with.

Between the ‘s’ key, the two drop down menus (one in the Feed view, one in the story titles pane), and the forthcoming Star button in the Feed view, I think that should more than cover it. Keyboard, single-click, and easily accessible menus.

What you’re asking for is a star outline next to the story title that you can click as well? I don’t want to clutter up the interface more than is necessary.

Here is 3 suggestions how you can ditch you menu dropdown left of story title. http://i42.tinypic.com/o08mtw.png

Notice star in front of story name, and share options which are in different place for every story.

2nd one is best if you ask me.

Edit: For stories that aren’t saved star should be emplty with just blue outline. Saved stories have full blue star as in picture.
With this you need popup tooltip explanation for every option.

I favor the stars as well.

So Samuel, any further thoughts on this? Gave you example pic above, is that too cluttered or?

I would like to be able to star the story with just one click, especially on the iPad!

The social beta (http://dev.newsblur.com) has an additional one-click save/star button next to every story in the Feed view. Go use dev.newsblur.com, it’s the same backend as www.newsblur.com.

I’d also like a quick way to save a story from the list of items on the iPhone app. Currently in Feeddler you can tap the left side of a story to mark it read and then tap it again to save the story (star it), and then tap it again to mark it unread. A quick way to change the state of each item would be great.
