Notifications for classifiers (not just feeds), unbeatable hidden classifiers, and unsubscribe from a feed while reading a folder

Hi Samuel,

a few ideas / requests for your consideration:

  1. ability to unsubscribe from a feed while on a specific post, rather than having to go back to the feed list and find that feed and then being able to do it. This applies to the river view “All Site Stories”, and not when reading feed by feed.
  2. keyword based alerts: trigger an email alert not based on which feed receives an update but when a keyword that is important is in the title (or body or URL…), across all feeds
  3. at the opposite end of the spectrum to #2 above, a global mute for specific keywords: I understand that this can be done by downvoting with the “globe” option now but often times these mutes get overridden by an upvote for, say, the source.

You’re in luck because #2 and #3 are handled by global classifiers that are available to the Premium Archive Subscription tier. You just set up a keyword on title, text, or even URL and you set the scope to either folder or global, and then it applies to everything. What you want to do is set up notifications so that you get an email notification, iOS/Android/web notification, so you get notified immediately when one of your classifiers hits.

As for number one, if you’re on the web, you should be able to unsubscribe from the feed while reading the feed. You just go to the top story toolbar, their feed favicon, right-click on that, or click on the Menu icon, and you can subscribe for it right while you’re reading it.

Oh, I misread number three. It seems like you want to have an overridable downvote so that it never gets overridden by the upvote. That’s an interesting idea. I had not considered having one of those, like an unbeatable downvote. I’ll noodle on that.

Also reading number two a little more carefully, it seems you want to have an email notification based on a global classifier, but the notifications are set per feed, not globally. You would want to set up a notification for a classifier more so than a notification for a feed. Again, that’s a new idea, and I’ll have to figure out a UI to be able to handle that.

And rereading number one, it seems like you want to unsubscribe from the feed without having to load the feed, but from the post itself again. That’s new UI. I’ll have to think about how to do that. You have some interesting ideas that normally I pattern match into things I’ve already handled, but these are all slightly different.

Correct, correct, and correct.
