I recently signed up for a premium account and have been trying out your service. I have about a dozen colleagues who will follow suit if it works out.
I imported my feeds from google reader and found that none of my google alert RSS feeds work! This is truly the most important feature for me and my colleagues and without it, Newsblur isn’t really a useful business solution. Can you fix this?
It’s a while since I used it, but Google Alerts only delivers notifications to Google Reader or as email. Unless there’s an API into this, I doubt Newsblur can hook into this.
Newsblur doesn’t need to hook in directly, my friend.
The feed XML from my alerts already exists in google reader. I don’t understand why Newsblur can’t import the XML from the Alert feeds along with the rest of my Google Reader feeds.
I just created an alert and set it as RSS, copied the URL into NewsBlur and works fine.
Maybe it’s issue with the import from google or google don’t export the alert feeds correctly? Have you tried adding one manually to see if it works for you?
And “dozen colleagues” is not a motivator, just ask nicely.
Darren, I would like to ask nicely for my money back, since one of the principal advertised features – that Newsblur could import my Reader feeds – didn’t work.
Also, do you work for Newsblur or are you just guessing about what motivates the company? Last I checked they are charging people at the door, rather than allowing people to test it out for free. So maybe you might want to rethink what actually motivates the developers.
NewsBlur is also free (up to 64 feeds), marks as you scroll, and should import Alert feeds just fine (I have a few set up for newsblur). I’m not in support mode right now, but I would like to take a look at your feeds. You might be gone, but if anybody else has this issue I’d love to take a look at it.
Oh, and this is an important distinction, Feedly is still using Google Reader as a backend, so good luck when they make their switch. And considering you’re not paying them, that solution may not last long.
Devin I offered a solution and you throw your dummy out the pram. Its not newsblurs fault Google doesn’t export the feeds properly. feedly is not newsblur its more of a magazine format so if you prefer feedly I doubt you would ever have liked newsblur. Plus if Google don’t export the alert feed correctly then I’m impressed feedly can do the impossible. I am really impressed with newsblur as its a better Google reader and although I’m not using the maximum free feeds I will be getting a premium account shortly to help support them. And feedly will be using ads or premium amounts soon to support the influx of lost reader users. How do you think they are going to pay for hosting or to feed themselves?
So alerts have not been working week recently! Also all the product closures have been to move people to use Google+ so the lack of concern over alerts not working properly may indicate its demise in the future too
Devin. Whether or not you have “a dozen colleagues who will follow suit if it works out”, you’re not being reasonable. Newsblur is better than Google Reader in many respects and can only get better. Have a little patience and allow time for responses before throwing in the towel.
