Hello again,
I was poking around and I notice there’s some inconsistency when the “Mark a story as read” setting is set to “Manually by hitting u or m”. When enabled, you can mark a feed item as read using the right click context menu but you can’t mark an item as unread which I initially thought was a bug.
I did a bit of digging around in the codebase and I see that this is intentional (read_story_delay
set to -1
represents manual marking as read). That said, it seems that big of logic hasn’t been modified since it was first introduced 12 years ago so I wonder if that setting should be a bit more consistent.
Presumably being able to use the context menu doesn’t violate the manual workflow that much since it’s keyboard based so you really have to go out of your way to click on an item and hit the toggle, which you can’t really do by accident I would think.
As some background, now that YouTube backfilling exists, I thought I’d experiment with using Newsblur as a pseudo-watch backlog for older videos from long running channels.
I don’t know that I’ll actually retain manual feed marking as I’m switching all of those YouTube feeds to the much nicer (for video) magazine layout so “Don’t automatically mark stories as read” should probably be enough for my use case.
