Mac app crashes on launch

I’ve had this issue for several months. I tried a solution from a post in September but it did not resolve it for me. The Mac app launches and immediately closes. I could not find any errors in the console logs.

I removed these two folders and tried reinstalling, with no luck:

  • ~/Library/Containers/NewsBlur

  • ~/Library/Group Containers/group.com.newsblur.NewsBlur-Group

I do not see ~/Library/Containers/869A6A7B-0CF6-4A88-9B7D-63F13A17D7C4 on my system. I’m not sure if there’s a new folder with a new GUID

The app had been running fine until August. I since updated to MacOS and see the same issue. I am now on 26.3.1 on a Mac mini M2 Pro.

Is there anything else I can try to reset things and get it launching again?

That is a good question, I wonder what’s causing that. @Dejal any ideas, maybe something we can check for in Console.app?

Deleting the local data suggests that there’s something with the server data that causes the crash, but I think we investigated that possibility before.

A crash log might provide clues, or yes, the Console might have a clue. @ktooth you could email them to me at support@dejal.com if you like; I’d be happy to work with you to trace the issue.

I may need a little more guidance. When I look in the console, I do not see any crash log associated with Newsblur. I also don’t see anything in system.log or diagnostics with a relevant time stamp.

When I launch the app, the app window flashes and closes immediately (milliseconds). I don’t really see any clues.

Is there something to do to enable logs or could there be a peculiar permissions issue that would trip up this app but not others? If there’s another place to look or a particular log I am missing, let me know

I will add that the app works fine on my other computer (MacBook). It’s peculiar to this instance.

Very odd… if it works on another of your Macs, that indicates it isn’t server-side data. And you’ve eliminated client-side data; I can’t think of any other data locations on your Mac. It’s a recent Mac and current OS, too.

Open Console, start streaming, type NewsBlur in the search field and hit Return, then open NewsBlur. See if anything shows up in the Console.

I started over and removed the two container folders again. I still do not see any log activity when I launch this app.

Are these two folders the only two items I need to remove? The previous conversation I saw on this topic in September mentioned removing a container folder with a GUID name. I don’t have a matching folder, but could there be another to search for? I feel like a property file or something got corrupted and needs to be rebuilt, but I haven’t been able to locate anything searching in the ~/Library folders. Could something be stored at the system level?

Yes, it does feel like some damaged file, but I can’t think of any other location. The app is sandboxed, so all data are in the two container folders. The ~/Library/Containers/NewsBlur container folder is actually located at ~/Library/Containers/com.newsblur.NewsBlur if you use Terminal; the Finder hides the details, just displaying it as NewsBlur.
