iPadOS: j key skips several new posts after app-switching

Open a feed with dozens of new items. In my case: Hacker News: Newest
Find a series of new items in a row, start at the newest.
Press j to move into a story that triggers the problem.
Press ⌘+O to open the story, in the Safari browser (not in-app Safari)
Press ⌘+Tab to switch apps from Safari back to NewsBlur.
Press keyboard ‘j’ to go down to next item. Instead of going directly down to the next story as it does normally, NewsBlur will skip over several new items to one that is farther down the list.

As of right now, the story that triggers it is “Osaka bans smoking on all of its streets, vaping included.” This is the 19th story in the feed right now. It skips 5 items, going to “FTC Takes Action Against [company name] for Alleged Lax Data Security”. Another story that triggers it is “The ocean teems with networks of interconnected bacteria”. In this case it skips 12 items to: [company name]: Cheap, no-nonsense email.
I can reproduce this fairly consistently. To trigger it again, I have to close the app and restart it. The story that I press ⌘+O on does not have to be unread. However, moving j to move into the triggering story seems to be a requirement to trigger the problem. I do not run into the problem if I just start by scrolling to the trigger story and tapping my finger on it, then pressing ⌘+O .
