The NewsBlur app on my iPad 2 (iOS v7.0.4) is reported as using 833 MB of space which is… quite a lot. Is there any way I can purge or reduce whatever the app has downloaded to my iPad?

You can change the settings in Preferences > Offline Stories. Note that the “Delete offline stories…” button, in spite of of the “…”, doesn’t bring up a confirmation alert; it deletes them immediately.
You can also change how many stories are stored. Additionally, you can turn off image downloading.
