Internet Explorer 8 support

Hello!
Until one hour ago, newsblur worked perfektly with Internet Explorer 8. Now, the Frame on the left with the feeds isn ́t loading. Is Internet Explorer 8 not supported any more?
I can ́t upgrade or change my Explorer, because it ́s a computer at work!

And now, I have a premium account, that i can ́t use. That ́s really great!

If you want to keep using IE8 you can use: www.google.com/chromeframe
If you have Vista you can update for free to IE9
You can also use modern browsers on WinXP like:
https://www.mozilla.org/en-US/ Firefox
https://www.google.com/intl/en/chrome… Chrome
http://www.opera.com/ Opera
Or if you can’t install anything on your computer: http://portableapps.com/apps/internet…

Just to state the obvious: If you are forced to use IE8 at work neither of those options is really possible, as they will be against company policy. At the very least I would check the IT policy VERY carefully before putting any program on your work PC - when you can’t install any programs your IT department has probably not just done that to annoy you.

Facing the same problem, which will probably force me to move, unlike the original poster that kept me from signing up to premium in the first place, so I really don’t mind. In the end we are all happy to see IE8 die

Here at work, it isn ́t possible to download another browser. Im forced to use IE8.

I tried newsblur and it worked fine with IE8. Then i paid for the premium account and some days later, IE8 wasn ́t supported anymore.

That ́s not very Costumer friendly. At Least the basic features should be useable with old browsers.

Can I get my money back?

If he can’t upgrade the browser at work, he most likely can’t install another one either.

It’s possible to get portable versions of, e.g. Firefox, like @Fredinand mentioned that you can simply copy to a USB stick and run from there, without needing to install it on the computer at all.

Like @Ben Fries said though, do check you company policy since that might not be allowed either, even if it is technically possible.

Once again: I ́m forced to use IE8!

It ́s not allowed and/or possible to install other browsers or Add ons!
Updating is not possible!
USB is deactivated!
It ́s not possible to download apps.

That ́s the failure:

If you email samuel@newsblur.com, I believe you can probably get a refund.

about a year ago, i upgraded to IE9 and it made some of the work i do next to impossible (for instance, html in hotmail, now outlook, formats differently under 9 & is difficult to read & edit for someone with rudimentary skills such as myself; moreover, IE8 has text links of recently closed windows in the blank (new tab) windows which i use extensively…so i undid the upgrade and im now back to using IE8, where i will stay…

is it possible for me to download or copy the account that i had here and move it to another reader?

I also am stuck with IE8 at work and can’t install a new browser. I just upgraded to premium 2 weeks ago and this stinks. I am going to have to move to another site for this type of service. A little warning would have been nice.

Settings (gear) > Account > Download OPML

It isn’t just NewsBlur that doesn’t support IE8, even Google only support the current and previous releases of IE, on a rolling basis (so currently IE 10 and IE 9) - http://support.google.com/a/bin/answe…

IE8 was released 4 years ago and more and more sites will stop supporting it. jQuery 2.0 (http://blog.jquery.com/2013/04/18/jqu…), a very popular tool used by website developers, was recently released which also drops support for anything less than IE9, meaning new sites will be broken ‘by default’.

Sticking around with older browsers is putting yourself at risk (no security updates) and is holding the web back in general.

I understand that company policy doesn’t allow some people to upgrade they browser, but in that case I would suggest talking to the IT department and seeing what their roadmap is.

Sorry this doesn’t help with the issue, but requesting support for a 4 year old browser isn’t productive.

I’m sure that Samuel also has stats for the number of visitors using each browser and for IE8 I’m guessing it will likely be in the ~1%.

how do i get to settings? right now all i have is your front page with “welcome rjs0”, new features, feedback, the site statistics, and the newsblur taskbar; dont see anything on that taskbar that suggests settings…

I am also a premium account user who suddenly has no access to Newsblur, and am not happy about it. I have moxilla foxfire as well, and exactly the same problem is showing up there.

This isn’t a problem with newsblur, it’s a problem with your computer running an obsolete browser. Even if you can’t upgrade to IE9/10 due to the windows version you are on or company intranet compatibility then your IT department should be able to install an alternative browser.

Speak to your IT department.

This is pretty short-sighted. My wife is in this exact position. She works for Social Security, paid for a premium account, and cannot in any way install an alternative browser, or activate anything off USB stick. Talking to the IT department is a non-starter; they are not going to change browsers because mid-level management can’t get to their feeds.

I’m in a similar position. I work for a large non-profit health insurance company that has a contract with the DoD. This constrains our ability to put just anything on our machines. For a long time, IE8 was the only approved browser by the DoD. We developed applications to IE8, and the effort now to redevelop those applications is not worth the payoff; it is not worth the support head aches to have a two approved browser policy. I work in IT, so I have some latitude, and have installed Chrome for general internet browsing, but HAVE to use IE8 (I cannot install IE9, per company policy) for internal applications and sites. That’s largely because I’m expected not to ring up the Help Desk with problems for an unsupported browser.

Something tells me, Sam, that you are about to get a wave of people requesting their money back. And your “It’s time” is pretty callous, especially since it is aimed at a bunch of people who literally have NO control over what browser they use at work.

Every Air Force member that uses this product at work is now non functional as well. we cannot change browsers, cannot use portable apps, cannot use usb for anyting other than keyboard/mouse. this sucks because i really liked this reader, now i have paid for three years of a premium sub that i can’t use! AWESOME!!

I’m in the same position, IE8 at work and no possibility to install anything else. Very short sighted, yes its old but its also a commercial reality.

My premium account is now useless to me. How do I get my money back?

“We developed applications to IE8” - these days things are usually developed to the standards, the problem is that anything before IE9 had very bad support for the standards.

“the effort now to redevelop those applications is not worth the payoff” this is true for supporting IE8 these days
