I am fairly good at figuring things out and generally can solve a problem. This one is big enough to make me want to walk away. Many feeds I want don’t offer newsblur as an option. When I try to add them from within Newsblur, it only finds about half of them. I am stuck. I can’t get the ones I want. It should be simple. Please help me. I have chosen Newsblur because it has an app for my phone and my android tablet (I am mac otherwise). I also can’t figure out/don’t think there is an app for my desktop which I would like to have open and sitting there. I could keep an eye on it while I move around. Browser is not always open and sometimes I have fourteen or fifteen tabs open.
So you’re trying to add feeds to NewsBlur but NewsBlur isn’t finding the feeds? Is that the issue? I’m a bit confused, as you’re saying NewsBlur isn’t an option. But NewsBlur can just subscribe to feeds (including on the site directly by using the bookmarklet in Manage > Goodies).
Some examples of sites/feeds where this does not happen might help.
The “Goodies & Mobile Apps” item in the general newsblur menu does have some browser add-ons that will intercept and feed auto-discovery in pages (generally tag(s) in the page’s that advertises appropriate feeds for the page/site in question. Some sites not only don’t have these auto-discovery links, but increasingly (and unfortunately) don’t even offer RSS or Atom feeds.
At the end of the day, if you can find the URL for the RSS or Atom feed from a particular site, you can add it to newsblur. They don’t need to “offer newsblur as an option”, so much as you always have the option of using newsblur to consume such feeds.
Thank you. I am trying here. I downloaded and installed the safari extension and the helper app. That seems odd. Do I have to open it every time? I can put it in auto system login, but I want to understand. I logged out and logged back in. For now, at least, I want to control my feeds to very specific ones I have chosen. I went from google to feedly, which is nice and clean and took all of the feeds, but not as straightforward as newsblur. I like newsblur. When I got my newsblur account it magically found some of those. I added one today and when I did I was offered the chance to add a folder and build a hierarchy. I want to do that. I found an article about that, but nothing on my screen looks like the article. I’ll knock this one first, though. Here is one I want to add: ASPP.com which stands for American Society of Picture Professionals. They have a blog page and a feed button. The feed button gives me some choices of readers, but not newsblur. (Other sites offer choices and a different selection, but not newsblur.) I tried to figure out ways to find the address, but couldn’t. I went to my other successful feeds and tried to be scientific about it and still couldn’t figure it out. I then thought maybe this UML (Universal Machine) (I’m sure you guys know that, but I don’t want to be confusing.) was the generic, but not so. Maybe one of you will try to add ASPP and then tell me how. I saw a place in goodies for me to put a url, but I’m not quite sure what to put there as I still can’t do it even after my scientific adventure above. You can probably tell that I am somewhat new to feeds. I am very tired of dozens of emails everyday and have switched and I like it. I really appreciate the time and help you are offering me. Thank you very much.
Anna
In newsblur, press ‘a’ or use the “+” in the very lower left corner to add a site. paste in the “http://aspp.com/” address, (change folder if necessary,) press “Add Site”. A few seconds later, the feed is added.
Alternatively, if I go to http://aspp.com/ and hit the blog link, my browser auto-detects the advertised feed, and gives me an RSS icon in the address bar. As I’ve installed the “Register NewsBlur as an RSS Reader” extension for chrome, it brings me to the same “add site” dialog in NB.
For aspp.com’s blog if you use the Universal option it will take you to “http://feeds.feedburner.com/ASPPeNews”. This should be the feed you would add to Newsblur. However Josh Sled’s advice will let Newsblur do the work of finding that for you.
Great! I have the “+” button working. I’m having a great time! Haven’t tried lots of sites, but ASPP works like a charm and I played with the structure. I am a safari user and want to stick with that in spite of good arguments to switch to chrome. It is snazzy and would have some other benefits for me as well as the ability to register. I looked on the web extension page for safari and could not find such a register button. I found a button on their extension page called FeedButton 1.3. If you go to Apple’s extension page, you can see it under RSS. It says it shows available feeds and allows me to add them with my favorite RSS. Maybe it is generic? Daniel and Josh, you guys are really helping me. Thank you. I’m almost there. Am I just missing the register button? It seems unlikely that there would not be one for safari. Maybe I just don’t know how to look?
