The grid’s view purpose is, at least for me, to scroll through a bunch of feeds without opening one of them - the quickest way to separate the wheat from the chaff. So other than in all remaining modes of viewing, one doesn’t run through the feeds by keyboard-shortcut one by one - which makes the otherwise convenient opening of the first unread story counterproductive: Now you have to scroll down to the end of the first feed’s text to get what you want: The grid view.
So my proposal is: Grid view not without a preference analog to the option for opening a site (first story or all stories), i. e. “when opening a folder or all stories: show first story or all stories”.
