Forum login flow is confusing if you used a different email address

For reasons I don’t remember, I was using a different email for my forum.newsblur.com account than I was for Newsblur itself. This used to work fine, but the login flow changed so that it uses your account information from Newsblur to discover your email address. As a result, it asked me to create a new forum account when I already had one.

I fixed it by changing my Newsblur email address to match my forum account. So I’m okay now, but I think this is quite confusing.

You’re right. I did switch the NewsBlur forum to use OAuth on newsblur.com, but if you’d like, I can also merge your account based on the email. It seems like you already figured it out and resolved it, but for future users, I’m happy to merge the account so that you don’t have to change your NewsBlur email address just to log in.

I have the same problem. Can you merge this with the forum account with username jwolman? I can’t figure out any way to log in to that account now.

Ok I’m still new at this merge thing but I merged your account @jwolman. Let me know if you can login and have all of your original posts using your newsblur auth.

FWIW I’ve been having issues with Facebook OAuth after removing an email address from my FB account, and discovered that there’s an longstanding bug where if you change your email address, FB OAuth response basically stops sending the email address altogether. They also seem disinclined to address this bug, as it’s been 2 years+ and it’s still happening: https://developers.facebook.com/community/threads/276984085174740/

I’m not a developer, but in my layperson’s reading of it, OAuth has a “sub claim” that could be used to ID a returning user in the login flow?

Thanks, Samuel – looks like the merge worked and an oauth login brought me to my preexisting support forum account.
