Folder of feeds not refreshing

Some time ago I created a folder for all of the news sites associated with Apple computer that I follow. That’s been working fine. However, overnight (whilst I was asleep, and, as such, couldn’t have tweaked anything) every feed in that folder ceased updating.

This includes the Newsblur app, Newsblur website, and all of my RSS feed reading apps on iOS and iPadOS.

The feeds were popular sites like Apple Insider, MacWorld, MacRumours, and so on.

The feeds themselves seem to be operating fine; I tested in Feedbin and everything seems to be updating correctly.

In an attempt to diagnose what was going on, I moved all feeds to a new folder, AAPL, and when I did that, one feed (9to5 Mac) suddenly showed unread articles. No other feed did, and this seemingly only worked once.

As weird as it sounds, from a user perspective, the issue seems to impact any feed which is in the first (alphabetical) folder. I haven’t tried renaming things to zApple or anything, though.

At one point I noticed that if I told the NewsBlur app to show all articles, rather than just unread, it would then display the unread articles for the Apple feeds. Switch back to “unread” and they’re gone again.

Suggestions welcome on how to fix this, if it’s anything I can do.

Replying to myself: I have manually performed an “Insta-fetch” for stories in each of the feeds within the folder, and things are currently populating. Still unclear as to what happened, why, and so on.

Also, if someone could tell me how to delete a folder, I’d appreciate it. I have been stumbling around the web UI and just don’t see how to do it. I have a few empty folders, having re-organised things. I must be missing something obvious.

Same here, didn’t change anything from a day or two ago and none of the feeds load from multiple sites. If I click each feed individually I can get some of them to load sometimes but its very inconsistent.

Having the same issue

I launched some infrastructure changes yesterday and its possible I broke something. But I’m not quite sure what broke. I’ll need a bit more information to fix it, unfortunately.

So are unread counts not updating but the feeds are? If you open the feed in unread only mode, you dont see new stories? Or you only see old stories?

There are a few things going on, but it’s all a bit inconsistent. I’ll try to elaborate.

  1. My “Apple” folder had feeds in it which were updated at the websites themselves.
  2. None of those feeds were being updated in Newsblur
  3. I manually ran Insta-fetch stories for each feed, which (after a few moments) showed numerous Unread articles in each feed.
  4. At the moment, in Unread mode, only two sites currently have unread articles.
  5. If I enter All mode, the only articles that appear are those which were retrieved during step 3 above. No other articles are visible at, say, Apple Insider. However, this is only true for articles I’ve not read in NewsBlur (by selecting them). Once I select them, and move to another folder or feed, then returning to the previous feed shows NO articles (even in All mode)

So, in Unread mode at the moment, I have no articles in any of the dozen or so feeds in this folder.

If I move back to All mode, and select a feed, nothing at all is listed, as I already read each item during the above shuffle.

Sorry, clunky one to try to explain.

If I go to my list of feeds

Usually when I view feeds I set the view mode to the grey circle and I see a list of feeds with new items

If I do that now none of my feeds show any new items.

If I set it to “all mode” and click on an individual feed (say engadget). It will seemingly show new items in fhe feed (but this only happens for some feeds).

Going to feed details it shows a lot of errors (but this feed worked fine a few days ago).

Other feeds (say google top stories feed) should have 50-100 items in the feed after a few hours, but if i click that individual feed right now it will show no items as new. Going to feed details shows errors but the same settings worked two days ago.

Some feeds that were working two days ago show the ! symbol like they are completely broken now (google news technology for example)

edit: I did try insta-fetch like the other user and it does seem to load more items into the feed (but some feeds still seem to be missing new items even using this method)

Fantastic, thanks for the thorough write-up. Turns out it was hard to diagnose because there were 2 servers down at the same time! I couldn’t recover them immediately, but I fixed where feed fetch would fail. Should be OK starting now and will eventually re-enable inadvertently disabled sites over the next day.

Can confirm that I’m now seeing things that I previously was not. Thank you!
