Feeds don’t seem to be updating

I’m noticing today, and yesterday, that barely any of my feeds seem to be updating. Whereas I’d usually have 150+ posts per day over dozens of feeds, today there are hardly any. I’ve looked at the actual sites of some of my busiest feeds and they have plenty of new posts over the past couple of days that have not shown up in NewsBlur. Is there an issue, or a method I could try to attempt to correct the situation?

Hmm they’re definitely updating so I’m going to guess that maybe you’re in the Focus mode and only see feeds that you’ve trained. Check the bottom of the feed list.

Doesn’t seem to be on Focus mode. I have Unread Stories selected. Very strange. This evening, after several hours, only 6 new stories from 4 different feeds are showing up as unread. Normally there’d be maybe 40-50 at least in the same period. Visiting some of the actual feed sites shows that they are making posts. They’re just not making their way to my NewsBlur. It’s the same on both my ios app and logging in through a browser.

What’s your username and can you share a screenshot of this happening so I can consider a number of possibilities?

Username is annekenstein

Here are some screenshots -

showing my all stories setting as unread / oldest (my default setting)

Shot of some preference settings

And a shot where I changed it from unread to all stories, to show that, currently, all but one feed are empty. Very unusual to have so few feed updates over the course of a few hours.

If you’d like any more, let me know what might help.

A couple more screenshots, specifically for one troubling site.

It’s requesting my login info (i assume for that particular site, and not newsblur login) but doesn’t accept what I enter.

I tried deleting that rss feed and re-adding it but no change. This login shows up instead.

Is there a way to check/change how often it queries the feed? Maybe too often?

I took a look at your account and everything looks healthy on the backend. You have 50 subscriptions, all actively polling, no errors. Right now you have 156 unread stories which is right around your expected 150+ per day.

Since things look normal now, my best guess is that you were temporarily in Focus mode without realizing it. You have 4 feeds trained with Focus (green thumbs up on the feed itself): Laughing Squid, xspeeds.eu, Charlottetown Police, and one other. If Focus mode gets toggled on, you’d only see stories from those specific feeds, which lines up with the “6 stories from 4 feeds” you were seeing. On the iPad app, double check that the filter at the top of the feed list is set to “Unread” and not “Focus.”

Two other things I noticed:

1. Boing Boing hasn’t had a new story since March 6. The feed URL is an old FeedBurner link that may have gone stale. You could try deleting and re-adding it with the site URL boingboing.net to pick up a fresh feed address.

2. The login prompt you’re seeing is from TV Chaos UK, not from NewsBlur. That site requires authentication to access its RSS feed. If your credentials changed on their site, the feed will keep prompting. You can update the saved credentials in NewsBlur by going to that feed’s settings (the gear icon) and entering your TV Chaos UK login there.

Let me know if the unread counts drop again and I can dig deeper.

Thank you.

Things are looking a bit back to normal today. I appreciate you taking the time to look. (yeah, I have more than a few dead or near-dead links I need to clean out, lol)

So I’m still having an issue with one feed in particular: tv chaos Uk. It is a private torrent site. I think maybe newsblur has been fetching the feed too often resulting in the 403 error? Not sure why as it has been working perfectly well for years. They say nothing’s changed on their end and suggest an interval of maybe one check per hour. Is that possible to do with newsblur or am I out of luck?

Statistics for that feed now shows it updates at 22 hour intervals?

Sorry for bothering you with this but that feed is the most valuable feed I check.

Also, regarding the login prompt, which is still coming up for this site when accessing newsblur from a browser, the site administrator replied to a help query with this:

Quoting

Any idea on why my login credentials aren’t accepted when I use my username and password in the login window in the photo?

Very likely a confusion on the part of the client. There is no password requirement for the RSS feed, it is included in the URL for your feed eg:

https://tvchaosuk.com/rss/571.xxxxxxxxxxxxxxx

They are blocking NewsBlur and NB is helpfully using a proxy to get around the block, but at the expense of a time delay. Let them know that they are showing a 403 Forbidden for NewsBlur.
