The idea is pretty simple: I’m a power user. I have about 30 different folders. Each folder is it’s own category. I would love to be able to change the default icon of a folder. The ideal for me would be to allow me to upload my own small png file, that way I could customise each folder precisely. I mean, websites and feeds have a little icon next to them, surely if I had a png of a logo that size then newsblur would be able to display it. A simpler version of this idea is let users choose between 100 plus pre approved icons that are included in the app by default. If that is the method then I would appreciate being able to select different colours for the icon, that way I could use the same icon twice on two different folders and still be able to tell them apart.
Sam you’re the best!
And launched: Custom icons for folders and feeds | The NewsBlur Blog
This is such a fun feature! I’ve already configured all of my folder icons and I’m working on the icon-less feeds now.
I cant believe how well this was implemented, and how quickly. Thanks so much! My only remaining suggestion is to allow users to make the folder icon larger
Can this be implemented in the apps too?
On its way! It’s actually done in both, just waiting on launch. Android will come sooner (probably this week? PR is in) but iOS is still waiting on iOS 26 fixes that broke story reading. We’re working on it! @Dejal @andrei
Say more about larger folder icons. Wouldn’t that break things?
I understand what you mean. Perhaps you could allow the user to lets say double the folder icon size. That could be a visual way to easily discern folders from feeds, though of course that’s not a problem I ever encounter. Perhaps Im asking for too much of a good thing!
You might be on to something. We do have Custom CSS. What would be nice would be to somehow have the Claude agent SDK available to users so you could prompt it, get custom css out, and tweak it until satisfied. In the meantime you can do this with the GitHub repository and then paste in the custom css after asking Claude to turn the change into a snippet
Glad to see it’s coming to iOS.
If you’re already looking at ways to expand, how about a picker for feeds where there could be a choice. Bluesky for example defaults to the butterfly logo, but any of the social sites you could likely pull in their profile picture. If you then go so far as to implement a picker interface, you could show the feed default icon and allow it to be reverted from it instead of a button to revert.
It would also be nice if you’d consider supporting SVGs, and if you’d list in the modal the recommended dimensions for the icon.
I like how you’re thinking about this. I will say that we do already support a bunch of premade images in multiple styles, both outline and filled in. You can select from a bunch of emoji. But I did make a change where you can now upload SVGs or WebP’s, and it says so now on the upload custom image button. I also added the max 5MB and we resize any image you upload. So hopefully that’s now clearer and this is now deployed.
BTW, the iOS app is now waiting for approval on TestFlight, so it’s coming soon.
I’ll admit I did a double take when I saw SVG support in the patch notes on test flight and had to come back to look and see if you’d responded here.
Thanks! My custom icons from the web immediately display and the updated preferences window is nice and modern looking as well.
This feature is great! Is there enough metadata for a live search/filter feature? I see emoji have titles, others don’t. Ideally all would have multiple names to make search work well. Kind of like what fontawesome and other font sites have. Like you can type bike and see bike, bicycle, motorcycle, cycling, etc icons. I know the list isn’t that large currently, but it’s still hard to search through it all.
