It seems as though one is not able to comment on a shared item unless the owner has commented first. Is this intended/desirable? I can understand how this might not be desirable for some people, but a friend just shared a comic that I’d like to comment about and the option doesn’t show up.
Yup, as designed. I remember writing out my thoughts in another thread, but essentially in order to comment you have to “own” the comment, which means you have to share it. Otherwise, you can reply to other people sharing it. But it would be confusing if you could comment but it wasn’t a share. Just how it is.
The real problem is the UI. I have not a clue as to how to make this possible, on both the writing and reading ends, and still keep the interface as simple as possible.
Could a “reply” or “comment” link be added just like the reply link for a item with comments?
I’m not sure if that’s the cleanest solution. But I’ll keep this in mind as I work with it.
Thanks for commenting on this. I just launched this feature (and will be blogging it tomorrow morning). It’s on the web and will hit iOS and Android in due time. Thanks everybody!
I agree that it’s fine to not be able to comment on a story that hasn’t been shared, but you also can’t comment when someone has shared an item without a comment. That doesn’t seem desirable; isn’t the point of sharing a story with your friends to start a conversation?
