Clustering breaks in feeds with common titles

a: consists of quotes from other news articles, but is NOT a copy of the article, just a quote, and

b: reuses common article titles like “quote of the day”

on a more general note, disabling this should be doable from the settings box for the feed.

You should be able to disable without upgrading your plan! The only upgrade you need for story clustering is:

  1. If you want to automatically mark clusters as read (premium archive)
  2. If you want to expand story clustering to all of your feeds and not rely on the overhang of existing premium archive users’ feeds

But you should definitely be able to disable it at any level, including free. I’m surprised you think that’s not the case. I’ll try testing it again, it’s possible I broke something in last minute testing changes.

Confirmed, you absolutely can disable story clustering even if you’re not premium archive. Perhaps the one feature that needs premium archive (mark all clustered stories as read) needs to be more clearly marked as premium archive only. I tried to make it clear by only disabling that one checkbox.

ah, i was clicking in the control box for the feed. that’s the global settings section, it should be carrying over

Excellent point, I’ll get that fixed momentarily.

Ok, I’ve updated the feed options popover to only gate the mark stories as read for premium archive. That should work much better. Thanks for bringing this to my attention. You can expect that I’ll never employ dark patterns, so if I did, it was likely an accident!
