Change "Mark a Story as read" setting behavior

I prefer to click on a story to mark it as read. However, when a new site is loaded, the first unread article is automatically marked as read, without me clicking on it. It would be ideal if this default behavior is changed.

I tried changing the setting to “Manually by hitting u or m”, but that doesn’t do anything. I cannot mark a story as read by clicking on it or pressing u or m. Not sure what the issue it.

What you probably want to do is turn off the “Open first unread story” preference:
