Browsed from story and opened it in my browser (Firefox). Navigated “back” to find the text in the app all wonky. Force close and restart fixed it.

Yikes, that looks like a hardware / GPU acceleration failure.
Do you have any accessibility fonts or modules installed? Are you running a custom ROM or driver package? From an app standpoint, all we can do about a device’s wonky acceleration is give you a way to disable it, but that would massively slow down the UI.
Nope, nothing custom installed or any add-on fonts. It happens every now and then but very rarely.
