Android crash on feed with large images?

I sometimes get crashes browsing the feed for Newsroom (https://www.newsroom.co.nz/feed/rss). The crashes seem to happen when there are at least 20 unread articles, and I scroll down the list. The feed includes fairly large images and drawing the previews can be quite noticeable, even on a recent high-spec phone.

I can sometimes avoid the crash if I scan the titles, and then use Mark Newer Read from an article at the bottom of the screen. Or completely avoid it by disabling the ‘Show Image Preview Thumbnails’ preference.
