Why is the iPad client only showing me 5 unread items at a time?

For some reason, my iPad client will now only show me 5 unread items at a time. I can then Mark those 5 read and load 5 more to read. If I check out global or other lists of items it will give me more than 5. The limit only appears to be in my All Stories Unread option.

This is happening on my android and website as well. I’m betting this is intentional.

You have to go premium I think. The website is doing the same.

Not a good development for NewsBlur I don’t think.

It’s always been like this. River of News (reading by folder) is a premium feature. It is now enforced at the API level. I’m adding messaging to the coming iOS app.

Hmm…I don’t believe it has always been like this. The website use to let me do around 20. In any event, 5 is excessively low, even for free.

Website was set for 5 but 10 were mistakenly coming through the API. So I fixed the API to only give the correct amount. It should ideally be 0 for free users. The 5 stories are to show you what the feature looks like.

As a friendly reminder, I consider free accounts to be indefinite trials for premium accounts.

Well, this is not a welcome change. Those of us who came from Google Reader feel like it’s an unexpectedly low restriction; and RSS feeds typically allow 50 to 200 items per fetch. So maybe “River of News” should be reserved for fetching more than 50 items?

In any case, it would be nice to post an announcement of the intentionally changed behavior, so we don’t waste cycles troubleshooting our rig.

You came from a now defunct product, so your expectations shouldn’t be the same. NewsBlur is a for-pay service, and free accounts exist simply as trials with no time limit.

Sam, I’m sorry to hear you feel this way about your free users. Perhaps we have caught you at a particularly ungenerous time, but it doesn’t make me any more likely to want to become a premium member. In fact, it does the opposite. Of course, you have made a calculation that this will bring more people in than it drives away, and I can’t argue with that. But it is unfortunate nevertheless.

Well, I’m glad I found this thread. I was wasting a lot time trying to figure out what was wrong. I very much enjoyed using NewsBlur while it worked, and had recommended it to a number of people. Now I’ve ditched NewsBlur in favour of Feedly, and am quite content. Goodbye NewsBlur. Sorry, but I won’t be recommending you any more.

Targ, I feel the same way. I was searching to see why I’m only seeing 5 lately and this thread answered it. No more recommend newsblur.
