Some ideas to improve sidebar and subscription categorization.

Hi,
I’m a premium user of newsblur, and I really like it, especially the social feature.

I come up with some ideas that may improve the user experience of newsblur:

  1. One reason I like the old Google Reader is that you can rearrange the order of folders and sites manually, it’s very handy, especially for people that have hundreds of subscriptions. The ‘Most used on top’ feature is helpful, but people may want to put a most used folder in the middle/bottom for some reason.

  2. The ‘Expand Folder’ button should be on the left of folder, and the context menu button should on the right, the current position always confuses me(maybe need a different icon for context menu, the current one really looks like ‘expand’).

  3. Customized folder color or icon: In old Google Reader, folders are tags, I think it would be great if we can customize the style of a folder, changing background and foreground should be enough, just like tags in Gmail. I haven’t seen any other reader services implement this.

Manual feed and folder sorting is coming. It’s going to take a bit of work.

I disagree about the expansion icon. I much prefer menus on the left and collapse on the right.

Interesting idea about the custom colors for folders, but my solution is to automatically have colors for the feeds inside. That’s effectively custom colors, as each folder has different feeds, so each folder has its own color theme.
