It’s been talked about before. I’m actually against this idea for a simple reason: too much noise. You would be inundated with unread posts faster than you can find the unsubscribe button. Remember, it’s not a curated list of posts, it’s a curated list of lists of uncurated posts. It’s an enormous commitment and I don’t think it’s a great experience.

Google Reader did similar with its Packages concept, which was a prebuilt folder of feeds that was a one-shot subscribe. I can see it being useful to be able to import an OPML as a new folder, but I always had problems when it duplicated stuff I already subscribed to under a slightly different feed URL.

I would really like this as long as:

  1. It de-duplicated so subscribing to 3 different economics OPML files didn’t get me three slightly different subscriptions to Marginal Revolution.
  2. It had it own section in the interface which didn’t add to the overall totals. Find a feed you really like and add it properly.
  3. Set fetch and count settings to easy-for-newsblur values. I see this as a means to find feeds and browse news, not maintian regular reads.

Ouch. I was really hoping you had a different view on this, Sam. I’d like there to be the possibility of an open “FriendFeed” which works via RSS and dynamic OPML. Imagine my friend publishes an OPML file for all the public feeds he/she has on different services. Think about all the buttons on about.me, etc. In one fell swoop, suddenly, I’m subscribed to them all and following them–no facebook, or filter bubbling encountered.
