how do i fillter or categorise them in some meaningful way?
Use the Intelligence Trainer (Manage > Trainer) to conveniently go through site by site and choose what you like and dislike about the feed. You can also train as you read, so it’s easy to filter out stories you no longer want to see while highlighting the stories you do.

There just seems no way to do what you suggest can be done.
What is needed is a simple set of icons/functions
i suggest the most useful intuitive approach would be …
‘More like this’/‘Less like this’/‘Never like this’.
And have these options on the Post List, as well as or instead of the individual Post
