Control-click opening links in foreground tabs despite browser setting

I’m using newsblur.com on Firefox 26.0 for Linux Mint.

When I right-click on a link in a story and choose ‘open in new tab’, it opens in a new background tab. When I control-click on a link in a story, it opens in a new foreground tab, overriding the browser configuration.

I’d expect control-click to honour the browser settings, and open in a new background tab.

Any ideas when / if this will be fixed?  It’s still a problem to this day.
